Titles and modes of address

The official titles of the chief executives of Australian institutions are capitalised, for example:

  • The Governor-General John Smith, the Premier of Victoria Jane Smith.

Lower case when generic (exceptions: The Australian monarch, prime minister and treasurer and foreign heads of state):

  • The minister’s view, the Prime Minister’s view, the President’s view.

Initial capitals are always used in modes of address or honorifics, for example:

  • Dame Joan Sutherland, Professor Arthur Delbridge, Ms Strickland.

The first time a person is referred to they should be represented by first name then surname. The second time a person is referred to they should be represented by the honorific followed by the surname, for example:

  • Prime Minister Jane Smith, then Ms Smith.
