Sentence structure

Recommended sentence length is 10-15 words. Write simply and clearly. Remember, less is more.
The recommendation is for short paragraphs that concentrate on a single idea.
Make sure your sentences stand as complete thoughts in their own right. Each sentence may build on the concepts in the previous sentences, but a student should know what is being discussed without having to go back to the previous sentence to understand it.
For example, sentences that start with it and this can make it difficult to know what's being discussed. An option is to describe what you mean by this, for example, 'This process..'
Tips include:

  • Make sure the end of a sentence provides a clear ending of the thought.
  • Avoid using too many adjectives and adverbs.
  • Avoid turning verbs into nouns.

For example, teachers prefer short holidays not teachers have a preference for short holidays.
